Offline use and syncing between devices
What works offline, how your notes sync between devices, and what to do if they don’t.
Last updated 27 September 2026
Your notes are saved to your account and sync to every device you sign in on.
Offline: apps vs web
iPhone/iPad, Android and the desktop app keep a copy of your work on the device:
- —After you sign in online, the app downloads your mushafs, notes and notebook pages automatically, so you can open them without internet later. Leave the app open online for a little while after signing in on a new device so this can finish.
- —You can keep annotating while offline. Your edits are stored on the device and sync when you're back online, with the app open.
- —The Qur'an text comes with the app.
- —Things that need the internet: recitation audio, extra translations and tafsir, AI features, hadith lookups, Word/PowerPoint import, and live collaboration.
Web (app.qurannotate.com) needs an internet connection. It doesn't keep your notes for offline use, and changes made without a connection may not be saved. If your connection drops on the web, don't reload the page until you're back online.
On a shared mushaf that others edit live, the apps show "Offline — edits saved locally, will sync when reconnected". The web shows "Offline — view only (reconnect to edit)".
How to tell if something hasn't synced

Normally there's no "Saved" message: no indicator means everything is fine. Look out for:
- —Syncing N or Failed N in a mushaf's header.
- —"N change(s) need attention — tap to retry" in a note or notebook.
- —In the apps, a small badge such as "N offline edits syncing…" or "N couldn't sync — tap to review".
- —On phones, the Done button in a note shows "Saving..." while saving and "Save failed" if it couldn't save.
Fixing changes that didn't sync
Check your internet connection.
Tap the Failed chip or the "need attention" message. A window explains that nothing was deleted and the changes are still stored on this device.
Tap Retry (or Retry all changes). Each item also explains why it failed.
For offline edits to shared mushafs in the apps, tap the badge to open Unsynced offline edits and choose Retry.
Only choose Remove or Dismiss if you're sure you don't want that change. It won't be saved.
Seeing changes from another device
- —Make sure both devices are signed in to the same account (check Settings > Account).
- —Open the app on the device that made the changes, online, so it can send them.
- —Then open (or reopen) the mushaf on the other device.
Please don't sign out with unsynced changes
Signing out while changes are waiting to sync could lose them. First make sure no Syncing/Failed indicators are showing.
Still not syncing? See "Troubleshooting", or email salam@qurannotate.com with your device, app version and what isn't appearing.
